And Why Schools Are Being Restless To Re-openMy sister who is in standard 12th started crying one day while giving an online test that her school has been organizing ever since the world got locked down due to the pandemic. Every time she wanted to submit the PDF of her answer sheet, some technical error abrupted in between. And this wasn’t the only reason students are going through hard times attending online lectures. Now think, if the senior students are being mentally stressed due to online lectures, how this might be taking a toll on the junior and kindergarten kids who are supposed to be enjoying the most colorful phase of their lives.

PROBLEMS BEING FACED BY STUDENTS

  1. Irritating technical issues- Your morning mood plays a critical role in deciding how your whole day is gonna be. A similar thing happens when the students find it hard to log into their online lectures because of technical issues or a bad network. These unwelcoming online lectures spoil the students’ mood even before the classes start. It must be jittery for students as well as the teachers when they face troubles before or amid the lecture, especially when they are trying to concentrate on a complex topic of a particular subject.

  1. Online classes are boring- It’s a no-brainer that we really miss being in touch with other humans. Well, nobody likes being caged and it’s even tougher for the little ones with delicate minds attending their online schools. They do not find the lectures interesting and often end up being lethargic instead of getting educated.

  1. Lack of interaction- Children, especially the little ones studying in kindergarten tends to learn more when they observe the vibrant expressions and emotions in their educators’ faces. They take interest when they’re introduced to the subjects in live offline classes via large colorful pictures and live demos of the tasks. Though the educators can share their screens to explain, it still lacks direct emotional interaction. No interaction and lack of in-person attachments with the teachers and their fellow classmates make them feel like they’re in an emotionless world. This makes them even less enthusiastic about their lectures.

  1. But…Texting works no? Initially, students, especially the senior ones indeed enjoyed texting their friends on watsapp during their ongoing lectures. But gradually, they lose interest and started missing going to school like they used to do, before the pandemic.

  1. Serious eye-damage-This is one of the biggest concerns among children in online schooling. According to a report from Hindustan Times, many parents have complained that their children developed fever and headaches due to long screentime while attending online classes. And the lecture time usually gets stretched longer than the supposed time period, sometimes due to technical issues otherwise when teachers are motivated enough to teach students for extra 15 minutes.

  1. Mental health crisis- Some parents also complained that online classes are taking tolls on their children’s mental health also. They confessed that they’re noticing their kids being furious, restless, and cranky ever since they’ve been exposed to the screens for hours. How can we expect our kids to grow when their mental health is at stake? After all, health is anytime more important than the damn syllabus. Studying these behaviors, a psychiatrist says worryingly,

“It’s worse than the cannabis addiction”.

  1. Physical health being compromised- What else can you expect! Sitting in front of their mobile or computer screens and staying active on Zoom, children have become physically less active. Plus, the epidemic is not allowing them to play outdoors either. This time, not going to school is nothing like their summer vacations. This is troubling their physical growth negatively.

  1. Giving online exams is another headache- The Apps getting faltered, buffering web pages, and time-lapse during the online exams that schools are conducting are another kind of pain for students. My sister whom I was talking about in the first paragraph literally breaks down in almost every exam while submitting her online answer sheet. But schools do not budge with taking these unusual tests where almost everybody is free to cheat from their notes and textbooks. Can someone explain what’s the point of conducting these kinds of exams?

PROBLEMS THAT TEACHERS ARE FACING DURING ONLINE LECTURES-

While children are struggling while attending the virtual classes, teachers aren’t happy either. There’s a number of things that the school teachers are facing to make the class more productive. Let’s talk about them too.

Here’s Why Teachers Aren’t Happy With Virtual Lectures Either

  1. Little to no knowledge of the latest technologies- You might have come across those videos, blogs, or social media posts during the starting days of lockdown where teachers and professors were seen getting perplexed and anxious about using online meeting apps like Zoom and Google meet. Teachers were novices in the technology and were unable to share their screens properly and some of them even chose not to share their screens at all. Sometimes, they just explain everything only with their mics ON.

Though they’ve learned the basics of how to use the meeting apps in one year since the lockdown began, they still struggle to handle the features and new updates of these apps. They could’ve made their virtual lectures more entertaining so that students feel they’re really missing on something valuable.

  1. Looking after every student has become impossible- In online classes, it becomes almost impossible to give attention and get personalized with every student. Everyone has different doubts and different requirements in a particular subject that teachers are finding difficult to manage. Thus, teachers are hardly satisfied with this mode of teaching as well.

  1. Bully students- Most of us have watched videos and listened to the audios where some students were interrupting and disturbing their teachers by texting unnecessarily, switching ON their speakers and played songs in high volume, getting abusive, and not paying any heed to their teacher’s words. These kinds of situations made teachers vulnerable and anxious about online classes.

  1. Difficulties in doubt-solving sessions- The teachers find it very difficult to make students understand the intricate problems and can’t help them as they could in the in-person sessions.

OPENING SCHOOLS AMID THE FEAR OF COVID-19

While schools are still trying to address these problems, keeping the COVID-19 in mind, they’ve to come up with precautions when they re-open. Although the world is getting inoculated with the vaccines to fight COVID-19, one can’t predict when will corona vanish completely. Because no vaccine gives 100% assurance on killing the COVID completely from a human body and the new mutants are even more contagious. As per WHO, these new variants might be reducing the power of antibodies already present in a human body as well.

Thus, re-opening schools in India after getting over the second wave of COVID-19 is a good idea, but avoiding the precautionary measures is absolutely not.

Here’s What Can Be Done To Protect Students From COVID-19 In Schools and Colleges-

It’s been a year and the school children as well as the teachers are getting more desperate than ever to get rid of the overwhelming online lectures and online exams. And the government is also concerned about the all-around development of students. Let’s see what all can be done to reduce the chances of infection in schools when they re-open-

  • Mask should be mandatory just like the school uniform- This doesn’t necessarily mean schools should launch a mask matching with the school’s uniform. But, they must mandate wearing cloth masks on the school campus as well as during the transportation.
  • Maintaining social distancing- Schools should call students in at the most half the number of their classroom’s seating capacity, in order to maintain the social distancing among students.
  • Proper Sanitization- School administrators must ensure that premises of the school are fully sanitized. Although the school authorities cannot go after everyone to check on their hand being sanitized. They can
  • 1. Sanitizing the washrooms in school more often- Sanitizing the washrooms numerous times a day can play a big role in containing the infection, just like it did in Dharavi slums, which was a big headache for the government.
  • 2. Installing the complete disinfection tunnels at the entrance of the school or classrooms to sanitize everyone from the tip of the head to the sole of their shoes. This can be proved as a one-stop solution for sanitization, especially the ones with safe and natural sanitizers.
